Cortile Colony

We were charged with renovating and expanding a 1923-era Neo-Italianate structure on a large estate in an urban environment.

The original house was untouched and formed an L-shaped structure that framed an existing pool but lacked a sense of place on the expansive estate grounds.

Our solution crafted a new kitchen, living, guest and garage pavilions, taking advantage of the one-room-wide structure to create galleries and porches that overlook both the existing pool and a new central courtyard—the focal point of our addition. These porches and galleries further lock the addition into a compound, framing space and providing circulation around both water features.

The tectonics of our solution allowed us to utilize new technology within an uninsulated thick tile wall section. The mechanical systems, once installed, removed the moisture that was inherent to the existing exterior wall system. All new plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems were carefully hidden within our new structure—a thickened wood-framed insulated wall system that brought all energy use, codes, and standards into compliance.
