Light and Shadow Box
This corner lot anchors the Southern border of a Cottage District, an original 50'-0" wide lot neighborhood.
A modern “one room wide” open plan mimics the proportions of the original neighborhood cottages; while spatial configurations of the rooms are optimized to render the maximum usable outdoor space within the narrow lot. Gracious glass window / door openings and the cottage vernacular bay window act to merge the interior spaces with the pool courtyard defined by the perimeter stone wall. Hanging in the traditional bay window, a folded blackened-steel stair subtly emphasizes its materiality while melding with the black painted steel structure throughout, delivering unobstructed courtyard views. This home and its design solutions exploit the constrictive boundaries of a small 50′ site to create a lush courtyard and modern indoor spaces with abundant natural light.
